What is a Restoration Breeder?
A restoration breeder’s focus is to bring back, repair, or renovate their breed of passion, much like Eldridge’s 1920's era cavalier restoration, when he sought British breeders to produce the
“Blenheim Spaniels of the Old World type.”
These dogs were dubbed Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in the four colors that are currently recognized by AKC and parent clubs as the breed standard (Blenheim, Tri, Black and Tan and Ruby).
Similar to the restoration of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel driven by Eldridge in the 1920's, we pride ourselves in being a part of restoring the colors we see in centuries old paintings using advances in color coat traits to purposefully create the
"Chocolate Cavalier Spaniels of Old World type."
Much like even the Mona Lisa needs the most talented art restoration specialists, so does the Chocolate Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
Other Color Cavaliers
The first time I saw a picture of a chocolate and tan cavalier spaniel, I was in awe. The rich chocolate coat, and perfectly placed tan points had me intrigued. I had to know more. I had seen the standard four coloring but what made these unique? The B locus was the answer!
Aside from the standard colors, the Chocolate Cavalier Spaniel is known to come in the following additional colors:
Chocolate and Tan, Chocolate Ruby, Chocolate Blenheim, and Chocolate Tri. Furthermore, caused by pairing an appropriate K locus, there are also Chocolate and White, Black and White, Solid Black, and Solid Chocolate, all seen in "A Dozen Colors of Cavaliers" video presented by yours truly!
We have put together the genetics to create all of these colors and look forward to presenting these color options in our future lineage.
Do chocolate genetics affect health?
Simply put, no! The coat color does not affect health and is just a matter of personal preference.

We have dedicated years researching bloodlines, pedigrees, and overall cavalier health. All pups are genetic tested before adding to our breeding program, to ensure the healthiest pup possible for your family. California Cavalier Company is dedicated to a kennel free environment, where our adults are raised in our home or in our guardian home program. We raise our litters in home and are dedicated to raising a well-adjusted puppy.
Our program includes early neurological stimulation, age-appropriate vaccinations, vet check, and started on potty training. All of our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel are AKC, and all pups are registerable with AKC. Ask about our guardian program today!
